1. Tap People on main screen.
2. Click on Menu --> Import/Export --> Export to SD Card. This saves all your contacts so there is no way of loosing them.
3. Click on Menu --> Delete (relax you won't loose anything .. it just saves duplications and headaches later)
4. Click on Menu --> Select All --> Delete
5. Now open you browser and login to your Gmail account.
6. I actually deleted all my contacts here as well. If you don't want to do this, skip this step altogether.
7. Go back to your phone with an empty people app open.
8. Click on Menu --> Import/Export --> Import from SD card --> Google
9. Choose the .vcf file you created in step 2. If the phone finds more than one .vcf files, it displays them all with the create date and time so it is easy to pick the correct one. Let Android do its stuff. Once it has finished importing, it will automatically sync it with Gmail.
10. Now if you check your Gmail --> Contacts, everything should be there.
11. In Gmail Contacts, select all, click on More Actions --> Find & Merge Duplicates. Eliminate all the duplicates.
12. It is all done. Now if you make a change to a contact in Gmail, it will sync to the phone and
